The Act of Non-Doing

The act of non-doing is when we let our bodies sit in stillness while pausing all motions of activity. As nice as this seems, our minds have a difficult time allowing us to do nothing. The reason being is that we tend to believe that the act of non-doing is what it sounds like when it is quite the opposite.

In Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zin, he states that “such moments of non-doing are the greatest gift one can give oneself,” because it allows you to shift in the motions of being. What this means is that by us sitting still we are attending to the moment and accepting that this is it. We are allowing our minds to think clearly and letting our sight see what is in front of us. We aren’t in the motion of changing, fixing, or adjusting what could be, we are just letting it be.

In time I have learned that the act of non-doing is essential, which has led me to sit here and share it with you all.
